Moshup Beach MV My "Moshup Beach spot" was at the far left of the photo shown, during summer 2005. I found that the largest occupancy of this beach allowed distances of 50-100 feet between sunbathing groups of singles, gay and straight couples, and plenty of families. It did not appear to be the spot for Nudist Resort types. It was a pleasant 1/4 mile hike down from the cliff head to the clothed part of the beach... |
Colorful Lobsters in the News Lobsters come in a variety of colors. The ones you will see at Five Islands and the rest of New England are mostly a dark reddish-brown in color. They can also be blue-green, yellow, white, orange and red. Albino lobsters (white) are the only ones that don't turn red when cooked. When lobsters are cooked, all other pigments are masked except for the underlying red color, this is why all lobsters a... |

Sand Fiddler Crab I have a crab in my aquarium i believe is a fiddler due to one large claw and one small. I found him digging into a dead fish body today and eating the flesh. Did he kill the fish? It seemed healthy prior to being found in his claws. Also do Fiddler's eat fish? He was advertised as a Thai Crab in the Wal-Mart where I bought him, but I don't think he is a Thai Crab. He is about 1 in with claws.... |

West coast musings West Coast tides are totally different than ours (well not totally). If you look at a graphic chart of our tides, you'll notice that each day one high tide is a little higher and one low is a little lower, though only by a few inches over here. On the west coast, I'm not entirely sure why yet, this cycle is way more pronounced so that each day the cycle goes Low-High, High-Low, High-High, Low-Low.... |

Opinion: Financial Meldown Averted - What About Greenland? Looking for ideas for a kayak trip Oops - I meant BUGS up there are ferocious. |
Looking for ideas for a kayak trip I canoed this area more than 15 years ago, and it was quite wild then, probably hasn't changed much. most of the people we saw (maybe a group or two a day, if any at all, except on west grand lake, where we could see multiple motorboats in the distance a lot of the time), were fishermen. We went in summer, spring and fall would be a dream. Bus up there are FEROCIOUS in the spring, you'll avoid m... |
More info on closing Lecount to surfing That's true there does need to be somthing, again you guys can wade anywhere we are reliant on a certain set of conditions to surf but being as it is that tourists do pay the bills through the summer season it will be interesting to see how this all plays out and if the town has some respect and reguard for those of us who actually use the spot... |
More info on closing Lecount to surfing Don't agree, Mikem: I think that's expecting a lot. Tourists with kids aren't bad or stupid, just in such a different space that I really think something's got to be posted establishing surfers' right to tehir own area, to non-interference. Lost in Wellfleet !!! -Blue Yater Longboard Hey Eileen, Sorry about your board! Maybe the wind carried it deeper into the marsh (stranger things have happened) It'll turn up. More info on closing Lecount to surfing It should be the other way around, thats like a dog walker asking baseball players to go somewhere else because they need to walk on the diamond. More info on closing Lecount to surfing Aimee - I wouldn't let this discussion turn you off to Wellfleet. During the Bertha swell, I thought Lecount was too crowded so I continued 1 minute up the road to find perfect lefts and rights that I had more or less to myself... I actually wanted more company in the water. And the people I met were friendly, happy and joyful... all of the things that surfing embodies.
I suspect that a compromis... |
More info on closing Lecount to surfing I was considering buying a home in Wellfleet but the surf was on the top of my list of reasons for choosing that town specifically. Seems I should do some further research. |
Could "Drill baby drill" be good for the environment? The NY Times article conveniently forgets to mention that besides oil subsidies the American taxpayer has paid, the Water and Wildlife Fund has several billion w/ interest that sits collecting interest! Neither party has had the more gumption to access that and purchase wilderness areas, esp. New England sensitive areas. Drilling does NOTHING to alleviate the increasing CO2 problem and our ocean... |
More info on closing Lecount to surfing Setting aside the anomoly of what happened at Lecount, the bigger question here is how do we share the beach and the waves? Surfers have unwritten rules that work surprisingly well. Non-surfers don't know those rules and there's no reason to expect them to. That's where lifeguards come in. Both in and away from lifeguard areas all we can ask is that people pay attention to their surroundings and s... |
More info on closing Lecount to surfing I'm not a surfer (just a tourist boogie-boarder), but it seems to me that you folks might be a little less agravated at the tourists, going forward, if you could have a section of beach closed off to swimmers - preferably where there's a good break. That way - speaking to Chris's experience - you have recourse when mom & kids are in your way: it's posted, "surfers only", or swim at your own ris... |
Could "Drill baby drill" be good for the environment?
Honestly,I don't know whether to laugh or cry when i read such disingenuous foolishness
especially since drilling there would not seriously alleviate our growing energy needs. It's like advocating for more crime in the streets to get more funding for the police force. |
More info on closing Lecount to surfing Sounds to me like they will enforce the no surfing in front of the protected beach from 9-4, fine by me; isn't that the case at every other beach only 3 months out of the year? BUT, I think there is allot of ignorance from parents and tourists that hasn't been mentioned.
Maybe I'm guilty of enjoying waist high waves on an 80 degree day in the middle of the summer? , paying my way into the beach a... |
More info on closing Lecount to surfing It is to bad that the actions of few, effect everyone. The dirty mouthed mental migets, that are the cause, need to step up and make things right. We all have to share. Yes it stinks to have people in the way, but remember: YOU TO GOT IN THE WAY ONCE ALSO. |
Could "Drill baby drill" be good for the environment? Don't you remember when the Argo Merchant spilled 3,000,000 gallons of oil on Cape Caawd in 1977? The waves were glassy for years and thee was no seaweed washing up the beach to get my bikini all yicky- Ah, those were he days! |

Lecount to be closed to surfers in '09. It was only a matter of time before it would come to this. I've been surfing here since the mid 60's. As long as I can remember 4-Mile (White Crest Beach) is the only beach where we are officially allowed to surf in Wellfleet. Back then we couldn't surf at Lecounts, Cahoun's, or Newcombs from opening day in June until Labor day. That included "before and after hours". For the past 15-20 years we'v... |
Lecount to be closed to surfers in '09. I taught lessons at the left break next to Lecount all summer. While not a firsthand observer, I heard about some incidents out front. There's a fine line between localism & blatant stupidity. My experience is that most 'fleet locals (whom I know many of) are cool & mellow to everyone in the water.

Lecount to be closed to surfers in '09. i surf for peace of mind, as an escape from the happenings on shore... the ocean is our sanctuary... it is an impetuous reaction by the surfers in wellfleet (be it local or visitors) to disrupt the ebb and tide of our sanctuary and mother nature just for a selfish wave... walk down the beach, find a new sand bar, i managed to surf without crowds and conflict all summer... its obvious that we are n... |
Lecount to be closed to surfers in '09. Most beaches in other states are closed to surfing during the "summer" monthes. Having grown up in New Jersey, where you could not surf during business hours on most beaches, I saw this first hand. I always loved the open free feeling on the National Sea Shore. I hope the new ruling can be changed for the surfers of the Cape. |
Lecount to be closed to surfers in '09. This is an understandable albeit impetuous reaction to the situation described above but, alas regretable. Does this mean that the entire beach will be off-limits every hour of every day? Or only during life-guarded hours?
Why was there no discussion of moving the swimmers' protected beach slightly away from the break? All it would take is a sign and to move a life-guard chair. What can we... |
Coast Guard Beach Cam As a returning Cape Cod guest each fall I have always loved this beach. This site is my "ocean fix" each morning when I turn on my computer and I can't wait to feel the sand beneath my feet in a couple of weeks. Stand Up Paddleboards: Friend or Foe? I couldn't agree more. It's about the rider not the board. All I do is standup. I've been very conscious of the concerns of regular surfers and always stay far to the edge or completely away from the lineup. That hasn't stopped fools from purposely paddling over and setting up camp in front of me just because they've read an article in surfer magazine. It has nothing to do with the board....rude i... |
