The purpose of the Petition Project is to demonstrate that the claim of “settled science” and an overwhelming “consensus” in favor of the hypothesis of human-caused global warming and consequent climatological damage is wrong. No such consensus or settled science exists. As indicated by the petition text and signatory list, a very large number of American scientists reject this hypothesis.
Publicists at the United Nations, Mr. Al Gore, and their supporters frequently claim that only a few “skeptics” remain – skeptics who are still unconvinced about the existence of a catastrophic human-caused global warming emergency.
It is evident that 31,478 Americans with university degrees in science – including 9,029 PhDs, are not "a few." Moreover, from the clear and strong petition statement that they have signed, it is evident that these 31,478 American scientists are not “skeptics.”
These scientists are instead convinced that the human-caused global warming hypothesis is without scientific validity and that government action on the basis of this hypothesis would unnecessarily and counterproductively damage both human prosperity and the natural environment of the Earth.
Here's the website for the Petition Project. For what it's worth, a signature from atomic bomb developer and advocate Edward Teller, the man who inspired the character Dr. Strangelove, is shown on the website's home page. Teller died in 2003.
The Petition Project is being used by people who want the government to move slowly (or not at all) in taking action against climate change. This letter at Boston.com is an example. Undoubtedly there are many more. How much weight should we give to this? We know a lot more about climate change today than we did a decade ago. In light of current evidence I wonder if some of the people who signed have changed their minds.

... Hey Curly Joe - Thanks for the comment. I thought I made it clear that the Petition Project was dubious because the lead scientist shown on their website was Edward Teller. The point of this post is to make the MB audience aware of people like Janet Vandermeulen. Last week Janet V wrote a letter to the Boston Globe that argued against taking action on climate change. The core of her argument was the Petition Project. "Scientists" can be found to support almost any side of an argument. I'll bet you could find a scary number of "scientists" who believe that the earth is flat. As you correctly point out, the vast majority of signatories to the Petition Project are not really scientists at all. Nonetheless, some very real and truly smart people DO question the link between greenhouse gasses and climate change... HOWEVER... they are vastly outnumbered by truly smart, highly qualified people who believe that there IS a link and that it IS strong. If we are going to mobilize society to take meaningful action against climate change we need to be aware of the arguments being used against such mobilization. |

Psammonologist on the Outer Shores Why the #$%! would this 'valueable' website be so dumb to even entertain such bs? Most of the PHd's (piled higher and deeper) referred to and 'scientists' are NOT employed by or have their disciplines in ECOLOGICAL fields, rather 'Doctor' of divinity????????, 'Energy', commerce, etc. Check them out for yourself! As a surfer and PhD employing my degree to harvesting oysters (and taking shucked shells to put back in 'the bay'), I can tell you that several inches of tidal rise along with acidification of our oceans (already by increasedCO2 that inhibits Calcium uptake- for you Calvinistic drolls, that's what seashells by the seashore..........................are made of!) will quickly lead to our demise! Did you know that the valueable phytoplankton provide the majority of our 02 and are immediately destroyed by Ph change? So c'mon, Morebeach.com, we rely on you to speak enlightened like our Pilgrim ancestors; sometimes..... the 2 sides of an argument are only..........................in your mind! Thanx |
