Nantucket Island is well-known for its breathtaking beaches. North shore beaches are protected by Nantucket Sound and usually have fewer waves. South shore beaches, open to the Atlantic Ocean, have more significant surf and strong currents.
At times, stiff north winds cause swells to increase on the north shore while decreasing wave size on the south side. While a rare occurrence, this does happen from time to time. Be sure to check the winds before choosing your beach destination for the day.
