The Massachusetts Ocean Management Initiative

To examine evolving ocean uses and develop a comprehensive approach to managing ocean resources, the Massachusetts Ocean Management Task Force was launched in 2003 and charged with developing recommendations, which were released in the 2004 Waves of Change report. This effort developed the foundation for ongoing mapping and planning activities and the Oceans Act of 2008, which was signed by Governor Deval Patrick on May 28. The Act requires Massachusetts to develop a first-in-the-nation comprehensive plan to manage development in state waters. Plan development is underway, see the EEA Massachusetts Ocean Plan website for details.

Get involved/stay informed:

  • Ocean Planning Listening Sessions - To begin development of the new Massachusetts Ocean Plan, the Executive Office of Energy and Environmental Affairs (EEA) is holding 18 Ocean Planning Listening Sessions throughout the state to hear from Commonwealth citizens on their goals for the ocean plan. See the Ocean Planning Listening Session Schedule for complete details.
  • Ocean Planning Alerts - To keep the public fully informed through the process, EEA will be releasing Ocean Planning Alerts and a quarterly electronic newsletter (both also available in print). To get on the mailing list for these products, and for direct notice of public meetings, please send a blank email to join-env-oceanplan@listserv.state.ma.us.
