Great Island Wellfleet

Great Island is a hidden Cape Cod beach adventure just waiting to be explored. What until recently used to be an island is now easily accessible by car. From the parking lot trailhead, a path follows the marsh along its entire length. This narrow sliver of land is called the Gut.

Right before the island's eastern tip is a sign pointing due south over the dunes. You can then follow the beach on either side of this peninsula. Visit the site of the Great Island Tavern, an historic establishment serving whalers during the 18th century. Further along the path, you reach a sandspit called Jeremy Point. This area's only inhabitants are terns, seagulls and an occasional harbor seal. Great Island is part of the Cape Cod National Seashore. The hike to Jeremy Point and back from the parking lot is a seven mile round trip.
