Description: Race Point is Herring Cove's undeveloped oceanside sibling. This sandspit was formed by gradual southern longshore drift. The beach here is wide, sandy and features one of the most scenic dune landscapes on the Cape.
It's lighthouse, indicating the northernmost tip of the Cape for marine vessels, is just a short walk away. Beachgoers can almost always observe fish, seals, whales and boats, all traveling through deep water close to shore. Because the sun shines directly overhead all day, Race point is a perfect tanning spot.
Due to its ocean-facing orientation, the water here is chilly. Rough surf is not uncommon, with a strong undertow too. This beach is part of the Cape Cod National Seashore. Detailed information can be found at Province Lands Visitor Center (located on Race Point Rd.). ORV permits are also available at Province Lands. All vehicles are subject to inspection before gaining beach access. 4WD owners can drive from here all the way down to High Head in Truro. Parking requires a daily seasonal fee. Beach facilities are available, including restrooms and showers. Lifeguards are also on duty in-season.
