  • Thinking About the Mayflower
This morning I was looking at wave charts for the North Atlantic, noting that tropical storm Ophelia was poised to deliver head high waves to our beaches starting tomorrow, when, because of the dreary morning perhaps, I flashed on Thanksgiving.  That got me to thinking about the Mayflower. I've been looking at wave charts for years, thinking about sailing from Cape Cod to England myself and have learned two lessons that I take as commandments for planning a sailing voyage across the North A ...

  • Not so bad
10:45 am  - Even though max winds aren't forecast for another hour or two it's clear that Irene is fizzling. The surge on the south shore shouldn't be too bad. Water may not even splash on the road at Saquatucket Harbor (see live view here).Do I regret boarding up our big south facing windows? No. But I do wish Nauset Marine had allowed my boat to ride this out on a mooring in Meeting House Pond. Now that the boat is out of the water I think I'll keep it out. Now that the kids are abou ...

  • Something Big Is "Irene"
The something big that showed up on the charts a week ago is now a category 1 hurricane named Irene. She decided to forego the Atlantic crossing. Her projected path now takes her along the Jersey Shore, into the island of Manhattan and past the Green Mountains of Vermont. The biggest threat from Irene is storm surge and massive waves along south facing beaches. Rhode Island may be especially hard hit. Ocean beaches on Nantucket and Martha's Vineyard will be punished. ...

  • Something Big May Be Brewing
Long range weather models on this peaceful Saturday morning of August 20th show something that has the look of what could become a powerful hurricane near the Carolinas by the end of next week. Let's hope it decides to follow the Gulf Stream rather than the Intercoastal Waterway. ...

  • Cape Cod Circumnavigation Completed
The Flying Fish off Coast Guard Beach July 20, 2011 with kayak on deck. On Wednesday, July 20, we finished our circumnavigation of Cape Cod. Having left P-Town Harbor in the dark at 4am we were rounding Race Point at sunrise. The area we passed through is supposed to be a great place to see whales. We didn't see anything except for a few sport fishing boats. The wind was on our nose and shifted to stay on our nose.... all... day... long. So we motored and motored some more. Noted a McMansi ...

  • Sailing Around Cape Cod - Home Stretch Tomorrow
Last Thursday we sailed the Flying Fish across Nantucket Sound from Harwich Port to Falmouth in a strong north wind that blew at 20-25 knots and gusted frequently to 30 kts (34.6 mph). Off Craigville, when we were 3 miles off the lee shore, the swell reached 3 feet and our 25' centerboard/keel boat was thrown around enough that I tied myself into the cockpit and told Jane to plant her skinny 14-year-old butt in the gangway and not come out in case we were knocked down.   With only 1/3 of th ...

  • Sailing Around Cape Cod
The Marine Forecast for today is Small Craft Advisory for northeast winds blowing 20-25 kts gusting to 30 kts with 4-7 foot seas. It's a perfect day for Jane and I to make the second leg of our circumnavigation of Cape Cod on the Flying Fish, our quarter century old O'Day 25' sailboat. Jane, who is 14, wanted to do interesting and meaningful things this summer. This will be one of those things. Jane has had fears of water ever since her first bath as a baby. Despite her fears she likes being on ...

  • Bleeding Diesel
My abilities as a mechanic never developed fully. Just after high school I bought a 1964 MGB that needed its rod bearings replaced just so I might learn a thing or two. A critical part of the assembly are bolts that connect the rods to the crank shaft. The bolts are kept from wriggling free by bent metal tabs. I distinctly remember tearing those tabs as I tightened the bolts to the requisite 75 foot pounds. Whenever I drove the car afterwards I worried that the bolts would loosen and a piston wo ...

  • SUP Controversy
Last weekend I ran into my good friend Ron Collins, a proseltyzing Stand Up Paddle surfer who loves to verbally assault me with the merits of SUPs.  He gave me a ration of grief for my comment in a thread at the forum at NESurf.com titled "Anti-SUP".  Mind you, if he'd bothered to read all my comments in the thread he'd see that I've staked out a reasonable middle ground. For those of you who aren't surfers, there's a controversy these days about SUPs riding waves in the same spots as ...

  • Dec 26 Beach Walk to Pochet Washover
Christmas Day's sunshine has turned into blizzard warnings from Long Island to Maine.  But here on the outer Cape warmer air will mean more rain than snow.  With a well stocked fridge, 3/4 full oil tank, wood stove with wood pile ready for action in case of a power failure and no need to go anywhere other than Allentown PA to visit the in-laws, a heavy 3' load of snow is something I'd rather enjoy. At 9am I took a walk south of Nauset Beach to the was ...

  • How cold is too cold?
6:30am - I've been  sitting here in the lobby of the Kyoto Grand Hotel in downtown Los Angeles on this fine Wednesday morning listening to piped in Christmas carols while preparing the 5 day surf forecast for Cape Cod.  The waves look great at the Cape.  Better than here in SoCal this week.  Not that I want to rub anyone's face in it but last weekend in LA was about as good as it gets in every way except surf. The air was dry, in the 80's and super duper clear. Visibility mus ...

  • Ahab: "I am madness maddened."
Last night, nearing the 1/2 way point in our more-or-less-chapter-a-night reading of Moby Dick, my daughter and I learned the true nature of Ahab and the reason for the Pequod's voyage. In previous chapters Ahab's been an enigmatic presence - a little crabby, a little sloppy, but mostly quiet and unseen. Sometimes, most of the time in fact, Melville takes a lot of words to get to the point.  Now the writer has Ahab disclose his full essence in just four words: "I am madness maddened." Prior ...

  • How much would you spend for a new pair of jeans?
Jeans are a core element of a Cape Codder's wardrobe. They look good when crusted in salt and benefit rather than suffer from abrasion by sand. And they're comfortable. My preference are Levi's but I'll buy Lee instead if the price difference is significant (as in $10).  I'm a classic jeans kind of guy and have never understood designer jeans.  I felt like a sell-out when I finally gave in to buying pre-washed, pre-shrunk. But I've never given in to buying distressed or stone washed je ...

  • Choosing Photo Contest Finalists
Whew - That took a long time.  We had a lot of great entries in the CC Waterfront Pixels Contest. Today's task was to edit them down to a manageable number so the other judges can choose the final winner and runners-up.  They're a great set, running the gamut from moody to funny to lively to still. See them here. Just have to get this off my chest.... From the ages of 12-30 there was nothing I cared more about than photography. My heroes were Ansel Adams, Richard Avedon, Cartier Bresso ...
