Chicago less windy than Boston

June 23, 2010 - Chicago has long been known as "the windy city". But facts don't back up the moniker. Boston has a better, albeit still imperfect, claim to the name. Chicago's average daily wind speed is 10.4 mph versus Boston's 12.4 mph. In any event, no matter how you measure things, New England is the winner of wind speed in the lower 48 states with average daily winds of 35.1 mph atop New Hampshire's Mt. Washington, 15.3 mph at Blue Hill in Milton, Massachusetts and 19.5 mph on Nantucket Sound.  For the record, the windiest place in America is St. Paul Island, Alaska. More from Andrew Phelps at WBUR
