The upraised forearm of Cape Cod, comprising the Outer Cape, includes the towns of Eastham, Wellfleet, Truro and Provincetown. This area is filled with history. The first land the Pilgrims on the Mayflower saw after crossing the Atlantic was Coast Guard Beach in Eastham; before they built the famous settlement in Plymouth they spent the winter anchored in Provincetown Harbor. The primary beaches of the Cape Cod National Seashore are located here.
Coast Guard Beach is regularly rated as one of the top ten beaches in America for beauty and cleanliness. Provincetown offers first class galleries and restaurants, while in nearby Province Lands there are spectacular dunes and challenging bike trails. Provincetown is also a popular departure point for whale watch tours, sunset cruises and ferries to Boston. Truro has quiet open spaces, expansive views and a regulation nine hole municipal golf course along the cliffs at Highland Light. Wellfleet has a welcoming main street with shops, galleries and food and a large wharf and marina. Eastham, Wellfleet and Truro have some of the Cape’s most spectacular beaches both on the Atlantic shore, where there are waves and bordering Cape Cod Bay where extensive tidal flats invite explorers of all ages.
