Surf cam controversy on Long Island
Georgica BeachToday's NY Times runs a story by Corey Kilgannon on the bad feelings surf cams engender when they expose a good break previously known only to locals.  The centerpiece of the story is a tale of woe (or joy depending on perspective) about Jimmy Minardi's stolen web cam. 45 year old Minardi is an East Hampton native and a fitness instructor to the stars.  His celebrity clients include Jerry and Jessica Seinfeld. He set up a cam overlooking Georgica Jetties (shown at right). The lesser known spot was popular with local surfers.  After the cam was set up kooks arrived along with bad vibes. Matt Norklun, an outspoken critic of the cam said, “I don’t know who took it, but whoever it is, he’s a folk hero around here. The police asked me, ‘Would you tell us if you did know?’ And I said, ‘Probably not.’ ”  Jimmy Minardi can't be stopped so easily.  He's setting up another camera with a second camera to keep an eye on the first one.

Surf cams save driving which in turn saves money and lessens CO2 output.  All good.  However, the folks who set up the cams  need to be respectful of the congestion they can cause at local breaks.  A cam at a crowded well-known spot does more good than harm.  A cam overlooking a small local spot... not cool.

Here's the NYT story

Serious waves coming next week

Friday 2pm: Waves are coming next week. A massive low pressure system develops on Monday 1-28, stretches the length of the East Coast by Tuesday and and throws out waves in the 10'+ range to east facing beaches from North Carolina to Maine. The wind will be onshore at 40mph+ on Monday. Looks like it'll turn offshore on Thursday and give us clean waves in the head high range.

Get out there today

nantucket buoy

Saturday 8:05am - Looking great for today. Low tide this afternoon, light wind offshore, Nantucket buoy showing 8' at 9 sec from the south. Doesn't get much better than this for mid January. Patriots game is tomorrow. Go today. You'll be happy you did.

And when you get back check out our new surf community. It's a great way to stay in touch with your crew.

New at Surf Expo Orlando
Buoyband
Photo of Buoyband prototype
Orlando Florida, January 12 - Surf Expo is a semi-annual gathering of the surf industry where local shops meet manufacturers, sales reps find new product lines and well-known surfers hang out with their friends.  It's a low key party where business gets done.  This is 5th Expo I've attended.  The novelty has worn off, but it's still a pleasure to be here. At this year's show there are two new products related to beach health and safety that I hope to see soon at local surf shops, Soleo organic sunscreen and Buoyband.

I'm a sunscreen zealot.  I slather it on in big globs whenever I go outside, especially when I go surfing or sailing.  I smear it heavily on my kids too. But I've always felt a little uneasy about the chemicals in the stuff.  My queasiness has no doubt been aided by comments from my good friend Steve.  Steve doesn't use sunscreen. He says to me, "the chemicals in sunscreen are carcinogenic."  Cancer from chemicals, cancer from the sun... for years I've decided tune out Steve and place my bet with the chemicals. At the same time I've been looking for something else.  My search got to the point where I considered manufacturing my own brand of sunscreen.  Yesterday at Expo I discovered Soleo organic sunscreen. Soleo uses micro-particles of zinc oxide and is 100% chemical free. Zinc oxide has been beloved by lifeguard noses for decades and certainly seems to be safe. Soleo uses micronized zinc that's absorbed into the skin so you can get protection without the white mess. Zinc is good for the immune system.

Nonetheless, because too much might not be a good thing, Soleo grinds the zinc particles large enough to stay out of the bloodstream. The micronized zinc is carried in a cream that's made of various types of vegetable oils. The result is a highly water resistant sunscreen that's genuinely non-toxic. The pleasing scent is minimal and it doesn't sting the eyes. I tried Soleo this morning for a two hour jet ski ride under a hot sun on the St Lucie River and confirm these claims. My eyes didn't sting, my skin didn't tan and splashing water didn't wash the sunscreen off. I'm a believer. Soleo will be appearing at shops in New England this summer. And there's more. Chemical based sunscreens are actually bad for the environment and are believed to be a primary cause of  degradation of a section of the Great Barrier Reef. This sounds absurd until you consider that many millions of people visit the same twenty mile stretch of reef each year. So Soleo isn't just good for you, it's good for the environment too. Finally, check out the Soleo Organics Surf Team: Colin McPhillips, Chris Ward, Kalani Robb, Shane Beschen, Sunny Garcia, Gavin Beschen, Josh Baxter and Kahea Hart. The other new product I like is the Buoyband.  Buoyband is a compact flotation system that provides emergency flotation for people who do not want a life vest. An inflatable tube is stored in a case about the size of an Ipod along with a CO2 cartridge.  The case is worn on the bicep and attached with a velcro strap like a surfboard leash. On top of the case is a handle that, when pulled, causes the tube to inflate.  The inflated tube is then pushed under the armpits where it provides flotation assistance.  I've surfed over 1000 sessions in the past dozen years and I can remember one time when I might have pulled the handle.  I was down deep in aerated water and was becoming concerned that I couldn't hold my breath much longer.  Buoyband would have given me a fast and sure way to the surface.  I know that I'd like to try the Buoyband and, if it felt ok, would probably wear it when I go out alone in winter or surf in waves 2X overhead.  But that's the thing. How will it feel in real use? The photo above shows a large prototype. The manufacturer says the actual unit will be smaller. Buoyband might also be great for kayakers. I don't think it'd be good on a larger boat however. The box on the bicep could easily get hung up on all kinds of things.
