Global Warming
My Greatest Global Warming Sin PDF Print E-mail
Tomorrow the world is meeting in Bali for the UN conference on climate change.  Nice venue. I wouldn’t mind being in Bali right now. Except for a few die hard deniers like Rush Limbaugh, the debate about whether or not the earth is warming is pretty much over. Deniers like Limbuagh point to selected data points to say that nothing’s happening (or even that the earth is actually cooling).  For example, on this December 2nd day on Cape Cod it’s roughly 10F below average.  Despite today’s cold, this Fall on Cape Cod has been atypically warm. In any case, Cape Cod is only a single data point. We’re talking about global climate change so we need to take a global view. That view is simply alarming. Greenland ice sheets are melting and moving at rates far higher than previous worst case scenarios.  Those ice sheets hold a lot of water and could, by melting and moving off of land and into the sea, cause sea levels to rise six feet by the end of this century.  In An Inconvenient Truth Al Gore makes the heartening point that the world came together to fight CFC production and that damage to the ozone layer is being slowly reversed.  Maybe Bali will be the first step for the world to truly come together and fight Global Warming.

Even though I think Limbaugh is seriously misguided in his views of climate change (among other things) he does make some good points about the hypocrisies of many of the people who are leading the fight against it. I think Al Gore’s use of carbon offsets is disingenuous. If you want to lecture people on reducing their carbon footprints then you should lead by example and reduce your own… in a real way like by moving into a house that has less than twenty rooms and 10,000 square feet (Al Gore’s) and into something more energy efficient like a 4,000 square foot ranch house that’s described as a “model of environmental rectitude” (George W. Bush’s home in Crawford).

My family lives in a 2,000 square foot house with a lot of windows and half baked insulation.  Our biggest global warming sin is that during the cold months, from late Fall through early Spring, we have a fire in an open fireplace almost every night.  We burn a cord and a half of wood each year simply because we like it.  We like lying down next to the warm fireplace to watch TV and fight for the spot closest to the hearth. It’s not efficient in any way. A wood stove would actually heat the house, but the aesthetic would be gone.  We’d miss the sounds and smell and look.  So… just because we like it… not because we need it… we burn 1.5 cords of wood a year.. I feel guilty about it, but not guilty enough to stop. I tell my lefty-granola eating enviro-minded friends about this sin and all of them give me a pass. I say, “you know, I could drive a Hummer and have less environmental impact” and they look at me and smile and say, yeah, but… a fire is sooo nice.  It‘s not the same.” But on the environmental balance sheet I think it is. I don’t like oversized SUV’s because I think they threaten my safety on the highway and take up too much space in parking lots.  But… with regard to the environment… I’m not in a position to throw stones.  Few of us are.  But all of us are willing to do things that don’t affect the quality of our lives. The trick in fighting global warming is for us to find ways we can make positive changes that don’t consist of denial.

Gigantic jellyfish blob kills 100,000 salmon PDF Print E-mail

The "Mauve Stinger"
A gigantic blob of jellyfish wiped out a salmon farm in Ireland this week.  Billions of jellyfish of the species  Pelagia nocticula (aka the "mauve stinger") congregated in a 10 square mile by 35 foot deep blanket and floated over two net pens off the coast of the Glens of Antrim, north of Belfast.  Over 100,000 salmon were killed.  These jellyfish normally keep to the Mediterranean.  Warming ocean temperature is considered a likely cause. Here's the full story from CNN

The Earth is Flat, Elvis Lives, Global Warming is a Scam PDF Print E-mail
Among other things global warming is a test of our ability to know what is real and true.  Scientific proof that global warming is happening will exist only after it has already happened.  As many observers have stated, we are conducting an experiment with our planet and don't know what the outcome will be.  Meanwhile evidence is pouring in from ice melt around the globe that SOMETHING is happening.  Scientists are guessing at the causes and consequences of what's going on. Politicians and businessmen are using those guesses for political and commercial advantages.  And we ordinary citizens wonder whether we should worry a lot, a little or not at all.

Even today, in 2007, in the face of more than half a millenia of irrefutable evidence, there are reasonable-sounding people who truly believe the earth is flat.  Click on the link to the forum of the Flat Earth Society below if you don't believe me.  Less surprising but no less delusional are people who believe, despite a body, a police report and a grave in Graceland, that Elvis is still alive.  My point here is that there are people who will deny proven facts if those facts contradict their beliefs. Duh. In the case of global warming the evidence is based on squishy trends and there is no "proof".  Instead we have likelihoods, odds, probabilities.

With all of this in mind, along with links to the Flat Earth Society and a website that proves Elvis lives, here are some links from this week's news with differing perspectives on global warming and climate change.

Cooling the Debate PDF Print E-mail

Keeping Cool on Global Warming

China and India have over 2 billion people who aspire to live life like Americans with big cars, big refrigerators, cold air conditioning, fat plates of meat and trips to Disney World. They're gonna get those things. And not only can't we stop them, we don't have the right to try. Thus, if C02 emissions are a prime cause of climate change, the earth will likely get warmer no matter how nobly Americans act in cutting back on personal C02 footprints. What can be done to prevent a possibly catastrophic rise in sea levels? The short term answer may be geo-engineering. One of the easiest geo-engineering solutions could be a man-made Krakatoa that throws dust into the upper atmosphere to block the sun just a little. Ken Caldeira discusses this solution in a NY Times editorial (link below). Meanwhile Pat Buchanan, quoting from Calvin Coolidge (President 1925-29, campaign slogan "Keep Cool with Coolidge), rejects the notion of catastrophe and Daniel Botkin takes a scientifically skeptical view of the evidence. It's good to have smart people carefully considering conventional wisdom. But we don't need irresponsible commentators like Rush Limbuagh pointing to last week's cooler than normal weather in Cincinnatti as evidence that nothing's going on... or a White House editing reports to make bad news look better.

SoCal Fires - Surf News 10-22 PDF Print E-mail
Surf News Monday Oct 22 10:30pm

Nice warm summer-like day in NE today.  Strong breeze. Great sailing weather.  If this is Global Warming it ain't all bad.  SoCal having problems with fires driven by dry Santa Ana winds.  Fire's a part of life there.  Nothing fun about being burned out of your house, losing your stuff, maybe even having to leave loved animals behind to die. Awful. Truly. At the same time, if you're out of the fire zone, the smell of burning chapparal is pleasant and the warm wind at night feels filled with potential.  I didn't check the surf cams at Malibu and in SD county.  It's easy to imagine people in the water surfing while the shore burns up, especially if there's good surf.  Here are some interesting surfing stories from the past week:
