out of a rain shower. One person was killed and four were injured.

Twenty miles south of San Francisco a little piece of Wellfleet lights up a
corner of California. For decades Wellfleet historians have believed
that a 30' lighthouse built in 1881 overlooking Wellfleet harbor
was demolished in 1925. It turns out that rather
than being demolished the iron lighthouse was deconstructed bolt by
bolt and beam by beam and shipped off to California to be rebuilt overlooking the Pacific. This nugget of historical correction was discovered by Colleen MacNeney who reported her finding in this month's edition of Lighthouse Digest.
With a modern light and optic the Point Montara light remains active today, guiding ships into the Golden
Gate. The keeper's abode is now a hostel.
Point Montara is shown below. See images of Point
Montara Lighthouse here.

Wikimedia image by Shutterglow One of the cool things about Cape Cod is that many beaches can be
accessed by off road vehicles. One of the frustrating things about Cape Cod
is that ORV beach access is often restricted in early summer when piping plovers
are hatching and fledging (developing muscles and feathers to fly). Towns and
the National Seashore do what they can to maintain as much beach access as possible.
The piping
plover is listed as an endangered species and protected by law. As of
June 4th ORV access to National Seashore beaches from Truro to Race Point is
severely restricted, access to Nauset Outer Beach is open and 4 of the 4.5 miles
of beach road on Sandy Neck is open.

Coopers Beach Southampton NY Stephen Leatherman (aka "Dr. Beach") has just released
his 2008 list of best beaches. Coast
Guard Beach in Eastham on Cape Cod has regularly ranked in the top 10 in
the past (last year he ranked it #5, and in 2006 it was #7). Not so this year.
None of New England's fine beaches made the cut... but two beaches on Long Island
did: Coopers
Beach in Southampton and Main Beach in East Hampton. Caladesi Island in
Florida was named the best beach in the USA. Filling out this year's list are
Hanalei Beach, Hawaii; Siesta Beach in Sarasota, Florida; , New York; Coronado
Beach in San Diego; Hamoa Beach, Hawaii; Cape Hatteras, North Carolina; Cape
Florida State Park near Miami; and Beachwalker Park on Kiawah Island, South
Carolina.

On May 5, after years of emotional debate on whether or not to build a town beach
between Nauset Light and Coast Guard beaches, Eastham voted 502-476
to totally abandon the project (a 2/3 majority was needed to continue). The Ocean Beach project began
in 2002 following a decision by the National Seashore to end drop offs
at Coast Guard beach. Nursing a long time grievance from the
loss of parking spaces at Coast Guard Beach after a 1978 storm, this
decision was the final straw. A group of residents discovered that the
town of Eastham owned 127 acres on the bluff south of Nauset Light and
formed the The Ocean Beach Committee. Committee members worked hard to
address conservation and cost concerns. On Monday night a majority of
town residents decided to leave the undeveloped area alone. Even though
The Committee failed in its primary goal the effort caused the National
Seashore to set aside 72 parking spots (62 at Nauset Light 10 at Coast
Guard) dedicated exclusively to Eastham residents. Here's the
story of Monday night's vote in the Cape Cod Times.
