Surfboard For Night Surfing

Surfboard For Night Surfing

August 6, 2010 - The deck looks like a pool of glowing plankton (or the Milky Way if you prefer) with an elder Harry Potter holding a crystal ball in the middle of it. Renowned board maker Bill Stewart created the Night Stalker surfboard specifically for surfing at night. The shortboard features two 700 lumen headlights for seeing waves when paddling out and LED embedded side fins for cool effects. The board was designed and shaped for Billabong's "Art of Shaping" charity event in conjunction with this year's ASR show in San Diego, August 13th and 14th.

Hint of Possible Swell Arriving Next Wed 8/4 Fades (update)

July 31, 2010 - The hint has faded to a long-odds prayer. There's a chance we could see waist high on Wednesday, maybe into Thursday, but prudent people wouldn't bet on it. A low pressure system is forecast to arrive in the Bahamas next week - it's too early to tell whether it will organize and take a trip north with the Gulf Stream or plow into the SE Atlantic coast.

July 28, 2010 - Flat to knee high wave conditions look set to continue through this coming weekend and into next week. However, long range forecasts show a hint of a possibility of a low pressure system bringing waves to Cape Cod in the head high range next Wednesday, August 4th. Normally we wouldn't report something so tenuous but it's been a long, long wait.

Seashore Water Temps Going Down

Seashore Water Temps Going DownJuly 22, 2010 - Today's strong westerly winds will blow relatively warm surface water away from Cape Cod National Seashore beaches. Cool water from below the surface will replace it. Water temps may drop below 60F. Cool water will be with us through the weekend and into next week.

Surfing Etiquette Lesson

July 19, 2010 - Surfing etiquette is simple. The peak (highest point) of the wave rules. The guy or gal who pops up first (stands up on the board) closest to the peak owns the wave. If that's too hard to remember then just remember to stay out of the way. If you can surf in front of someone without interfering with them, go ahead. Otherwise... see minute 1:48 in the following video:

The video features some great surfing by pros including Kelly Slater. Location is Santa Barbara, CA. And for those who complain about crowded Cape Cod lineups this video offers a lesson for that too.

Possible Swell Around July 10

Update July 6 -  Friday afternoon July 9 and Saturday, July 10th are now looking excellent with chest high waves and offshore wind. There might still be warm water since the offshore isn't too strong and the trunkable surface water may not be blown away. Trunks and clean chest high... doesn't get much better than that (let's not get greedy).

Update July 2 - Then again, maybe not. But there is tropical activity and sooner or later some of it will reach New England.

June 30, 2010 - This summer is off to a typical start with small waves wrapping around from the southwest. This condition looks likely to continue for the next week or so. But there's hope on the horizon in the form of a forecast low pressure system that could be working its way to New England (hopefully just offshore) around July 10. Go to StormSurfing.com to see the animated forecast.
