Cape Cod Born-Bred Surfer Publishes Surf Poetry Calendar

Cape Cod Born-Bred Surfer Publishes Surf Poetry Calendar

Bryan Knowles is one of the bravest surfers around. Not because he gets pitted deeper into the hollow of the wave than anyone else at Mavericks (he surfs big but not that big). No. He's brave because he dares to put into words the feelings and sentiments that many surfers feel but never articulate. He writes about the emotions of surfing. Most surfers have strong feelings about waiting for waves and riding them. But they don't talk about them. It's somehow too personal, too deep, too intimate. Knowles, 26, writes about those feelings and he writes well.

Growing up surfing on Cape Cod, Knowles now leads a life possessed by surfing in California. When he's not in the water, he's either shaping surfboards under his label Ride Anything or reinterpreting surfing through words on his blog SurfPoetry.com. Whether reflecting on the sensation of a New England duck-dive in February or the haunting mind warp that accompanies surfing Northern California's sharkier breaks, Knowles posts a new surf inspired poem every week or so. In collaboration with several up and coming surf photographers, he has produced a one of a kind Surf Poetry Calendar for 2011, featuring a collection of his poetry paired with first rate surf imagery. It can be purchased for $12.99 at http://www.surfpoetry.com/shop

"Spooks in Suits"
Bryan Knowles

October’s offshores reign

As almond eyes open upon crisp mornings

Tempting he who goes there.

Bobbing in the lineup,

Back to Cali’s rolling hills and golden landscape,

Facing corduroy lines as far as a wavering horizon permits your view.

To feel in tune with something so vast

Sends chills like those that leaky rubber lets in

Along with thoughts of vulnerability.

A matchless thrill

Feeling alive as the sea you’re in.

With angst of what passes beneath

Surrendered to back of mind

Devouring perfect waves

You join in a food chain

Whose kingdom we don’t throne.

Inevitable this time of year

Are humbling tails of spooks in suits

Who mix with our predation.

Fatal Shark Attack in California

October 23, 2010 - Lucas Ransom, a 19-year-old UC Santa Barbara student, was bodyboarding at a remote beach 5 miles north of California's Point Conception when an estimated 18-foot shark attacked him and pulled him under water, mauling his leg. Ransom's friend and others helped him to the beach, but he died shortly after due to blood loss.

Surf Beach, where the attack took place is located on the property of Vandenberg Air Force Base. The beach saw a previous shark attack in 2008 when a shark bit a surfer's board. In that attack the surfer was unharmed. According to the Global Shark Attack File, out of 53 reported shark "incidents" in California since 2000 (which include attacks and bumps), only three had been fatal prior to this attack. Kelly Slater Wins Hurley Pro

September 23, 2010 - 38-year-old Kelly Slater proved once again that he is one of the world's best surfers winning the Hurley World Pro contest at Trestles and a check for $105,000, the largest prize ever awarded in a surfing contest. This was Kelly's fourth elite tour win at Lowers since 2005 and the 43rd elite tour victory of his career. Conditions on the last day were so good that Slater said on the victory stand:

"I'd let 105,000 people punch me in the face to surf these waves by myself and you guys are paying me."

Big Waves From Igor

Big Waves From Igor

September 15, 2010 - Hurricane Igor is slated to hit Georges Bank early next week sending massive waves to Cape Cod's Atlantic beaches before, during and after its arrival.  Sunday 9/19 through Tuesday 9/21 are expected to be the biggest days with possible wave faces of up to 15'. Significant beach erosion is possible.

Hurricane Earl arrived from the south southwest and departed quickly. It caused no damage to beaches. Igor's waves, coming primarily from the southeast and east will be hitting more directly, harder and for a longer period of time. They may cause damage similar to that of a serious winter storm. Fortunately high tides will not be much higher than normal so the likelihood of extreme damage is low.
