Giant Jellyfish Invade Japan

Giant Jellyfish Invade JapanJuly 20th 2009 - Japanese researchers are warning of a potentially disastrous invasion from gigantic Nomura's jellyfish this year. The big blobs weigh up to 450 lbs and span up to 6'7". They could be a big problem for the Japanese fishing industry. The jellyfish reduce the numbers of fish that are caught and destroy expensive nets set up in coastal waters with their weight. Nomura's jellyfish normally live in the Yellow Sea and East China Sea. Warming weather and shifting currents may be the cause of the pending invasion. This year looks like it will be worse than 2005 when a similar onslaught took place. At the peak of the invasion that year, an estimated 300 to 500 million monster jellyfish passed through the Tsushima Strait into the Sea of Japan each day. Shark Victims Defend Sharks

July 16, 2009 - Nine shark attack victims were in Washington yesterday, lobbying the Senate to support the 2009 Shark Conservation Act. The bill would strengthen a ban on the odious practice of finning - when fins are cut off sharks that have been caught and they are thrown back into the water to die. "We'll finally be heard," Al Brenneka, who lost an arm in a 1976 shark attack, told the Washington Post. "Who should speak up for the sharks better than the people that the sharks have spoken to themselves?" Here's more on the story from Lindsay Barnett.

Sperm Whales Steal Fish Off The Hook

May 27, 2009 - Sperm whales off Sitka, Alaska are smart. They let fishermen do the hard work of baiting the long line hooks and setting them. Then, when fish like black cod are caught, the whales shake the fish free from the hooks and enjoy quick and easy hook-free snacks. The whales use echo-location to find their way around.
