Oceans not warming?

Oceans not warming? The past four years have seen above normal air temperatures around the globe. Glaciers are melting fast and the sea level has risen by 1/2 an inch - a big rise in such a short period of time.  Given these facts scientists were surprised that data collected from 3,000 aquatic robots swimming around in the world's oceans have shown no rise in sea water temperatures since 2003.  ZERO.  There are a number of possible explanations. Heat may be moving out to space.  It may be trapped in deeper waters not measured by the buoys.  Scientists are unsure what's really going on.  Here's the story from

Intro to Geo-Engineering

Geo-engineering is being considered ever more seriously as a solution should the effects of global warming become severe.  Beyond the many technical challenges and the massive "ooops" factor of unintended irreversible consequences is the simple question of who gets to set the earth's temperature.  Will the next world war be about the global thermostat?  Things will have to get pretty bad before governments consider taking action.  In the meantime you can acquaint yourself with some of the proposed solutions in this short and funny video called "Introduction to Geoengineering"

CO2 Making Oceans More Acidic

One aspect of global warming that's been getting more attention recently is ocean acidification.  The oceans are the biggest CO2 sponges on earth.  The problem is that as C02 is absorbed into the ocean the ph balance changes and the ocean becomes more acidic.  Acid hampers the creation of shells for all kinds of sea life, especially the kinds of life critical for the food chain such as corals.  Large shelled creaters such as clams and scallops, the kinds tasty to humans and pinnipeds will be affected too.  At the moment there are no predicitons for collapse of the marine food chain from CO2 overload. However, there are concerns that sea life will have some very hard times in the not so distant future.

Fun and informative video on Global Warming

Greg Craven, a high school science teacher in Oregon, has made a short and entertaining ultra-low budget video that does a great job of explaining why we need to take action on Global Warming now. His point is that taking action now is a form of risk management, like buying car insurance. Watch the video. It's less than ten minutes long. If nothing else you'll have fond memories of the science teacher you might have had.
