Drowning man reeled in by fisherman

Hallowell, Maine - Last Thursday at 4:30 am Bob Greene (42) was drinking his coffee and starting to think about going fishing.  He heard a sound "like a bird" from the Kennebec River. He looked at the river at what he first thought was a log. The log turned out to be a drowning man. Greene called 911 and the operator advised him to throw something to the man. Greene cast out his lure, hooked the man's shirt and reeled him into shore. He did it carefully. He was using 25 lb. test line and working against a strong current.

The drowning man, Michael Gibbs (25), had jumped off  the 114 foot Cushnoc Crossing Bridge.  He was hospitalized in critical condition.

Oak Bluffs Monster Shark Tournament

Oak Bluffs, Martha's Vineyard - The first day of fishing in the 22nd Annual Oak Bluffs Monster Shark Tournament starts tomorrow. Here are some thoughts from the 2006 competition:

"Mankind shares the elemental instinct of survival with every plant, animal and insect on Earth. Lose this instinct and sooner or later you'll be culled from the herd. And so it goes that most people who visit the beach have an innate fear of sharks. In 1975, Steven Spielberg brilliantly exploited that fear in the ultimate shark tale, Jaws. Anyone who sees the movie is guaranteed to think twice about swimming at the beach for a long, long time..". more
