Hurricane Bill's Waves hit Cape Cod - Sunday, August 23

August 24, 2009 - "Big Sunday" arrived without the predicted triple overhead early morning waves that had been forecast. At low tide the waves looked disappointingly small, like the after effects of a common run of the mill Nor'easter. However, as the tide filled in, the waves grew. By mid-day powerful waves had faces in excess of 10' and only the best and strongest surfers were able to make it out to ride them. All of Cape Cod's Atlantic facing beaches were closed to swimmers. Nauset Beach in Orleans was closed to everyone and ORVs were not being allowed onto the outer beach. By the end of the day the waves were cleaner and smaller and more surfers were out enjoying them. The water was warm! Hurricane Bill passed by quickly hundreds of miles offshore. Beach erosion and property damage on Cape Cod were thankfully light.

Big waves coming to Cape Cod

Big waves coming to Cape CodAugust 19, 2009 - Hurricane Bill is headed our way. The forecast chart from the US Navy (above) shows the eye passing within a few hundred miles of Nantucket and the Lower/Outer Cape around midnight on Sunday. A mile or two offshore the waves could be well over 25'. Closer to shore, because of the shallower water, the waves will max out between 10 to 18 feet depending on the bottom conditions and tide. High tides will see the biggest waves because deeper water will support them better. Day by day the forecast is as follows:

Friday 8/21 - Waist high waves in the afternoon with faces of 3-4'.
Saturday 8/22 - Waves head high and 1-2' overhead with faces of 6-8'.
Sunday 8/23 - Double overhead waves with faces of 12' and more.
Monday 8/24 - Triple overhead waves in the morning with faces of up to 18'.
Tuesday 8/25 - Chest high waves with faces of 4-5'.
The MoreBeach Cape Cod surf report covers details on wave riding conditions.

Cape Cod Bay and Nantucket Sound beaches should be relatively unaffected by swell from Hurricane Bill.

Cautionary note: When waves get to these sizes rip currents are common and at high tides the shorebreak can be extremely dangerous. Small children should be monitored vigilantly and kept well away from the surf.

Why Martha's Vineyard?

August 16, 2009 - Today's NY Times has commentary on vacationing on Martha's Vineyard from seven writers, editors and Alan Dershowitz (why him?) under the title "Why Democrats Love Martha's Vineyard." The writers do a great job of explaining the appeal of the island but they don't really explain why Democrats, in particular, love the place. Three quarters of MVY residents voted for Obama in the last election, so it is a fact that the place is as blue as the sea around it. But the appeal of Martha's Vineyard is apolitical. It is relaxed and joyful. The people are so warm and friendly that you might even say it has southern hospitality. Are those things only enjoyed by Democrats? Is fishing a Republican or Democratic pursuit? What about golf? What are the politics of hanging out on the beach? Riding a bike? Going on a boat ride? Eating an ice cream cone? The last time I checked Ron-Paulians and Sarah-Palinians enjoyed those things too.

Cape Cod Lifesaving Competition

August 13, 2009 - Summary of Tuesday's Cape Cod Lifesaving Competition at Newcomb Hollow from CGB Allstars:

Great day at Newcomb Hollow Beach. Nauset and National Seashore tied after twelve events and Nauset Beach won on the tie-breaker. Barnstable edged out Dennis to win the B Division. Kyle Shaw and Katie McCully won the MVP awards, and Chris Hafferty from Plymouth won the sportsmanship award. Great thanks to the town of Wellfleet for hosting a well run competition. And a special thumbs up to the Cape Cod Stranding Network for helping with a wayward seal looking to get in on the action.

The last event of the day:
