Penguins Harmed by Tracking Bands

Penguins Harmed by Tracking Bands

January 17, 2010 - Putting tags and bands on animals to track their movements and gain understanding of their activities has been a standard practice for half a century. More recently, studies of penguins identified by bands on their flippers have been used by climate scientists to study the effects of global warming in the Southern Ocean ecosystem.  A new study just published in Nature shows that banding of free-ranging king penguins (Aptenodytes patagonicus) impairs both their survival and reproduction. The bands diminish the penguins ability to swim so they are less efficient at gathering food for themselves and their chicks.

Over the course of a 10-year study, banded birds produced 39% fewer chicks and had a survival rate 16% lower than non-banded birds, demonstrating a massive long-term impact of banding and thus refuting the assumption that birds will ultimately adapt to being banded. Moreover, the flipper-banded penguins behave differently than unbanded penguins, calling into question the methodology of such studies.

But tracking remains critical to understanding. One solution is to use tiny microchips inserted under the penguins’ skin. This method was chosen by the authors of the Nature study.

I-Phone Beach Safety App for Aussies

January 17, 2010 - Thousands of beaches ring Australia's coast and each year those beaches see more than 12,000 rescues and nearly 100 drownings.  The new free "Beachsafe" iPhone app seeks to make Australian beaches safer. The app uses global positioning systems (GPS) to determine the closest beaches to the user and then provides information on surf conditions, tides, safety patrols and directions on how to get there.  Here's more from Reuters.

Help Wanted for RI Coastal Cleanups

January 10, 2011 - Here is the schedule of Coastal Cleanups in Rhode Island in 2011 hosted by Clean Ocean Access.  For most cleanups we will also send a team of volunteers to a nearby site to cover more territory. All the events are rain or shine unless it is a total washout in which case we just skip it entirely.  If there is anyone interested in helping with running the cleanups, let us know, we could use some help!

Thank you very much.

Jet Powered Surfboard - New at SurfExpo

Jet Powered Surfboard - New at SurfExpo

January 7, 2011, Orlando FL - When a hot product is introduced that revolutionizes a market the business world calls it a paradigm shift. The WaveJet, a jet-powered surfboard, could become the i-phone of the waves if and when the price comes down.  With an introductory cost of around $4,000 it's unlikely that surfing lineups will become overcrowded with the device overnight. But if and when it becomes affordable, it could change everything.

WaveJet uses waterproofed lithium batteries to drive impellers embedded in a powerpack installed into the belly of the board. The batteries and powerpack/drive assembly weigh roughly 10 lbs, last for 30-45 minutes of continuous use and can be installed in almost any board type as part of new construction. The wireless connection between wrist and motor is set so that if you fall off the board it automatically cuts the motor.  The batteries can be charged by your car as you drive to the beach.

WaveJet was invented by a tow-in surfer who wanted to get into monster waves unassisted by a jetski. WaveJet will do that. Big wave champion surfer Garrett McNamara endorses the product. But big wave surfers are few and far between. Even with a WaveJet not many people will take the chance of being crushed by a four-story office-building sized wave.  If it comes, the paradigm shift will come to the waves surfers see daily at local beaches.

With a wave jet a surfer can push a button and reach the line-up with virtually no effort at all. The effort of paddling into the lineup is the one thing that keeps surfing breaks from becoming even more crowded than they already are. WaveJet enables virtually anyone, at any skill level, to get out to the lineup faster than even the most experienced and best conditioned surfers.  And once in the line-up the WaveJet enables its user to claim virtually any wave he or she wants... paddling into the wave is virtually effortless too.

From WaveJet's brochure:

"Wirelessly controlled from a band on your wrist, WaveJet's patented PWP technology helps even the most experienced surfer catch more waves. Capable of eight to ten knots on still water, WaveJet lets surfers paddle out four times faster than by using arms alone... it puts you where you want to be to catch the wave."

While 30-45 minutes of continuous use doesn't sound like much, that could translate into 30-45 1-minute assists for paddling out (or in) to waves. Without power assistance, ten waves in 2 hours is a pretty good surfing session for most surfers. With WaveJet a surfer might ride 3-4 times more waves per session.

I spoke at length with a WaveJet rep. He's used the thing and says it works as advertised - in shortboards, SUPs and even kayaks. "Don't the guys hate you in the lineup?" No, he explained, he's cool about WaveJet and doesn't abuse its powers - "I could have every wave if I wanted to, but I hold back." What about someone less thoughtful?  He had no answer to that.

Feds Issue Request for Interest in MA Offshore Wind Development

December 29, 2010 - The Federal Bureau of Ocean Energy Management, Regulation and Enforcement ("BOEMRE") has published a Request For Interest regarding the development of wind energy in a 2,224 nautical miles square tract of ocean south and somewhat east of Martha's Vineyard and Nantucket. Companies interested in developing wind projects in the area are invited to submit detailed proposals of interest prior to February 28, 2011. Other requests and comments regarding the development of the area must also be received by that time.

The area of interest for commercial development is off the coast of Massachusetts beginning approximately 12 nm south of Martha’s Vineyard and Nantucket and extending approximately 31 nm seaward, south to the 60 meter depth contour, then east approximately 65 nm, then north approximately 31 nm. The area is approximately 2,224 square nm and contains 321 whole OCS lease blocks as well as 163 partial blocks.

Here's the full Request for Interest. See map of area being opened for wind energy projects here.
