Nauset Outer Beach Orleans/Chatham
A trip to the Outer Beach at Nauset is a great getaway if you own a 4WD vehicle. This stretch of sand extends south for five miles from Nauset Beach in Orleans to North Beach in Chatham. To begin, 4WDs with a sticker must check in at a small guardhouse in the Nauset Beach parking lot. From there, you drive along a sand access road through the dunes bordering the beach.
There are intermittent outlets between the dunes leading to the beach itself. Once on the spit, simply claim a patch of sand for yourself. There's plenty of room to park with a group of other vehicles or in a more private spot. Overnight camping is allowed here with a permit from May thru October. They can also be purchased off-season at the Orleans Police Station. Please contact Nauset Beach Administration or the Orleans PD for details.
Directions: Follow Main Steet in East Orleans to Nauset Beach Rd. to its end. Then drive thru Nauset Beach parking lot to ORV guardhouse at end.
