Maine Beaches

Click Here for Map to Hills Beach Beach Biddeford Maine

On the north side of Biddeford Pool is Hills Beach, a 500 yard stretch of sandy beach at the outlet of the Saco River. This beach is protected from the prevailing SW wind and swell so the air is generally warmer and the waves generally smaller than at Biddeford Pool Beach to the south. The beach is located in a residential area near the University of New England. There is limited street parking and no lifeguard, toilet or other facilities. Bird watching is popular here because of the proximity to wetlands.

Wave sports such as surfing, bodyboarding, skimboarding and surf kayaking are popular here. The hard packed sand also makes this a great beach for walking and jogging. Parking is somewhat limited along Fortunes Rocks Rd. and stickers (available at Town Hall) are required in season. There are porta potties and lifeguards (in season) but no other facilities.

Biddeford Pool Beach is at the eastern side of wide two-mile sandy ocean beach that connects with Fortunes Rocks Beach on its western side. There is a bathhouse here and lifeguards in season. This is a popular beach for wave sports such as surfing, bodyboarding, skimboarding and surf kayaking. The generously sized parking lot requires a sticker (available at Biddeford Town Hall) in season.

Biddeford Pool, a tidal lagoon north of the ocean beach, is a popular place for kayakers. It's good to time your paddle with high tide. At low tide the pool drains out except for the narrow gut leading in and out. This is a great spot for birding. The salt marshes and dunes are home to snowy egrets, blue heron, gulls, terns, sandpipers, Canadian geese and a variety of plovers and ducks. This also a great spot to fish for striped bass. The put in as at Vines Landing off of Yates Rd.
