The Allagash Wilderness Waterway runs from Chamberlain Lake to the village of Allagash connecting lakes and rivers along a 92 mile water route through Maine's commercial and state forests. Swimming, canoeing, kayaking, fishing and camping are the core of the Allagash Wilderness Waterway experience. Access here is primarily by canoe and kayak. This is a wilderness area with no facilities, a place where you can capture the timeless feeling of the north woods. Water levels vary with season and weather and the release of water from dams that feed the Waterway. Between Churchill Dam and Umsaskis Lake there is a 9-mile stretch of class-2 white water. If running white water is not to your taste portages can be arranged around this area. Plan ahead and be safe.
