Monomoy Island, Chatham

Image Cape Cod Beach Map

Description: Monomoy Island is both secluded and unspoiled in its beach topography and wildlife. This area has been designated as a National Wildlife Refuge, and is run by the US Fish and Wildlife Service. It is accessible only by boat and is made up of barrier islands, sand dunes, lakes and marshlands.

Monomoy harbors many species of migratory birds, including nesting shorebirds, during the summer season. Harbor seals also make the beaches here a seasonal home. Monomoy hosts some of the richest fishing grounds in New England, making it a sure bet for surfcasting during your visit.

Directions: Take a boat from Stage Harbor in Chatham through the cut, or hop a water taxi, instead.
