Lake Eden

Lake Eden is comprised of two connected arms separated by a peninsula. The longer arm stretches diagonally from southwest to northeast for approximately 1.5 miles along Rt 100. The shorter arm runs parallel for 3/4 of a mile. There is a swimming beach with boating access. Fishing is popular here.

26-acre Lake Shaftsbury offers a developed beach area with a snack bar and boat rentals (rowboats, paddle boats, canoes). Pit toilets are provided. An open picnic pavilion is available for groups. Swimming, boating, fishing and picnicking are popular here. There is an easy 2.7 mile trail around the lake's perimeter. The lake is surrounded by 101 acres of forest and wetlands. A furnished waterfront cottage that sleeps six sits on the "quiet" side of the park. Lake Shaftsbury also operates a group camping area with 15 lean-tos available.

Townshend Dam Recreation Area

The Townshend Dam Recreation Area offers swimming for day visitors to Townshend State Park. The Park is sited on a bend of the West River at the base of Bald Mountain. There is a hiking trail that climbs 1,100 feet to the top of the mountain. On the trail hikers will be rewarded with views of waterfalls, chutes, and pools. The mountaintop delivers views to north, south, and east. The camping area here was built by the CCC during the Great Depression in the 1930's. The forested campground provides 30 tent/trailer sites and 4 lean-to sites. There are two bathrooms with flush toilets. One of the bathrooms features hot showers. A picnic shelter with a fireplace and three tables is attached to the ranger's quarters. There is a limit of 6 people per site and only one vehicle per site.

Jamaica State Park West River

Jamaica State Park covers 772 alongside a bend in the West River. The swimming area at Salmon Hole is the site of an infamous Indian Massacre that took place 1748. This is a popular place for canoeing, kayaking and fishing. On the weekends in Spring and Fall, when there is is a water release on the West River from Ball Mountain Dam, river runners from across New England garther here to run the river. The deep water and slow currents here are great for fishing. There are 43 tent/trailer sites and 18 lean-to sites. Two rest rooms offer fkush toilets and hot showers. A picnic shelter and nature center are on the site.

Emerald Lake State Park Dorset

Emerald Lake is a small lake with a campground area carved out of the side of Dorset Mountain. There are some steep areas here so this is not an ideal site for active and inattentive young children. Swimming, fishing and boating (no motors) are popular in the lake. Pretty trails make this a good area for hiking as well. Close to the small beach is a snack bar and boat rentals. There are hillside and lakeside picnic areas with tables. 105 campsites, including 36 lean-tos, are located on a forested ridge above Emerald Lake. Flush toilets, hot showers and a dump station are provided.
